Truth and Transformation 2019

In March of 2019, more than 350 media professionals, educators, students, and community members attended the Truth and Transformation: Changing Racial Narratives in Media conference in St. Paul, MN. The two-day conference was designed to educate white-identified media professionals about the ways that white supremacy plays out in the newsroom and harmful narratives show up in the media. It also validated the experiences of many BIPOC professionals and provided an opportunity for them to engage in these conversations with their colleagues.

Participants explored their own histories, heard directly from those impacted by racism in journalism, and were asked to help identify the ways that they might be unknowingly contributing to the problem. Through this process, professionals learned to challenge their own assumptions, practices, and ways of knowing.
